Upgrading to Visual Studio 2010

Screen Shot VS 2010

Today I decided to join the rest of the developers with upgrading to Visual
Studio 2010. We were currently running Visual Studio 2008 sp1 for the past year
and a half. During the last upgrade from 2005 to 2008, we had some trouble with
converting the solution file from 2005 to 2008. No problems with Visual Studio
2010 conversion, it prompted with a wizard that did the conversation for me.
It even gave the option to take the solution file to .Net 4.0. While the
installation did take over 2 hours it was fairly painless. Here are a few tips
to aid during your conversion:

  • Make sure to backup all your project files before installation
  • Try run only Visual Studio Installer while installation is in progress
  • If the installation seems to time out ensure to can from installation menu and
reboot computer. (This happened at the end during the SQL Server 2008 Express
    Installation portion)
  • Find previous 2008 solution file and open it in Visual Studio 2010, the wizard
will appear to complete conversion to 2010
